Masters of Matter: Tom Bensari and the art of working with wood

mistrzowie materii tom bensari

I’m honored to be among the creators featured by Elle Decoration Polska in their series “Masters of Matter.”
This recognition is truly meaningful — because the title itself perfectly captures what I’ve been striving to do over the past years: to understand wood as a living material, to give it both beautiful and functional form, and to teach others to do the same through the woodworking courses at Bensari Workshop.

Craft as a way of thinking

Anyone who works with hand tools knows that wood is both a beautiful and demanding material — one that teaches humility.
That humility toward the material is, to me, the very essence of craftsmanship. It’s not about striving for perfect lines or right angles, but about taking the time to truly understand the nature of wood — to listen to it and learn how to work with it.

For me, traditional woodworking is more than a profession. It’s a way of thinking about the maker’s place in today’s world of excess and mass production. Every piece of furniture that leaves my workshop bears the trace of a human hand — a subtle, microscopic difference that no machine can replicate. Within those tiny imperfections lies the true beauty of wood as a natural material.

Learning through practice

That’s the approach I try to pass on at Bensari Workshop — a space I created to teach craftsmanship the way I wish I had been taught myself: through practice, deep understanding of the material, and the use of hand tools that allow you to create objects both beautiful and functional. It’s not only about mastering technique — it’s about cultivating mindfulness and respect for the material.

Craft in the context of contemporary design

Being featured in Masters of Matter is not only an honor, but also confirmation that craftsmanship still matters — that it remains an essential part of contemporary design.
It’s also a sign that Polish woodworkers are increasingly being recognized and appreciated on an international level. I personally know many of the artisans included in the Masters of Matter feature and have deep respect for the dedication they bring to restoring woodworking to its rightful place in modern culture.
