Courses are led by Tom Bensari, designer, master craftsman and founder of Bensari Workshop. The programme combines practical woodworking skills with direct experience of a professional workshop environment.
Traditional woodworking courses in Europe
Bensari Workshop welcomes participants from across Poland and Europe. International visitors regularly join our one-day and weekend courses to learn traditional woodworking skills that are becoming increasingly difficult to find in modern woodworking education.
The workshop is located in Wrocław, Poland, with convenient access from many European destinations.

Why Bensari Workshop?
Bensari Workshop is a working furniture-making studio where education is rooted in daily professional practice. Participants learn in the same workshop where furniture and collectible design pieces are created using traditional woodworking techniques.
Courses are conducted in small groups, allowing for individual guidance and direct contact with the instructor throughout the learning process. All tools, materials and safety equipment are provided, so participants can focus entirely on developing their woodworking skills.

Woodworking from scratch
One-Day Woodworking Course: Woodworking Fundamentals
A practical one-day woodworking course designed for beginners and anyone looking to build a solid foundation in traditional woodworking.
During the course, you will learn how to use essential hand tools, including saws, planes and chisels. We cover tool selection, setup, safe working practices and the fundamental techniques used in furniture making and traditional woodworking.
The course focuses on hands-on learning. Under the guidance of Tom Bensari, you will develop practical skills by building your own wooden knife rack while learning the principles of accurate measuring, marking, cutting, shaping and assembly.
All tools, materials and safety equipment are provided. No previous woodworking experience is required.
Weekend courses start at 9:00 AM, while weekday sessions begin at 2:00 PM.
The course lasts 1 day, approximately 7 to 8 hours.
Mortise and tenon joints
Mortise and tenon joinery – two-day woodworking course
A two-day woodworking course dedicated to one of the most important joints in traditional woodworking and furniture making: the mortise and tenon joint.
During the course, participants learn the principles of layout, marking, sawing, chiselling and fitting precise mortise and tenon joints using hand tools. Special attention is given to accuracy, joint strength and the role of traditional joinery in furniture construction.
As a practical project, each participant builds a traditional cutting board assembled without glue. The entire structure is held together using mortise and tenon joints reinforced with drawbore pins, demonstrating a centuries-old woodworking technique that combines strength, durability and craftsmanship.
All tools, materials and safety equipment are provided. The course is suitable for both beginners and woodworkers who wish to improve their joinery skills.

Learning to use a hand plane
A one-day woodworking course dedicated to one of the most important skills in traditional woodworking: preparing wood surfaces with hand planes.
During the course, participants learn how to use bench planes effectively to flatten, straighten and smooth wood surfaces. We cover the principles of grain direction, surface assessment, plane setup and the sequence of operations required to achieve accurate and consistent results.
The course also includes tool preparation and maintenance. Participants learn how to set up and adjust a hand plane, prepare a card scraper and understand when each tool should be used as part of the surface preparation process.
By the end of the course, you will understand how to plan the flattening process, diagnose common problems and produce smooth, accurate surfaces using traditional hand-tool techniques.

Dovetails
A two-day woodworking course focused on one of the most respected and enduring joints in traditional woodworking: the dovetail joint.
During the course, participants learn how to lay out, saw and fit hand-cut dovetails using traditional hand tools. We cover the complete process, from accurate marking and cutting to fine-tuning the fit and understanding the details that determine the strength and appearance of the finished joint.
As a practical project, each participant builds a traditional dovetailed box while developing the skills required to create clean, precise and durable joinery. Particular attention is given to accuracy, tool control and the sequence of operations that lead to consistent results.
Dovetail joints have been used in furniture making for centuries and remain one of the strongest methods of joining wood. When properly executed, they provide exceptional mechanical strength without the need for metal fasteners.

Hammer veneering
A two-day woodworking course dedicated to two traditional woodworking techniques: hammer veneering and steam bending.
Participants learn how to work with natural wood veneers, prepare substrates, use traditional hide glue and apply veneer using a veneer hammer. The course also introduces the principles of steam bending, including wood selection, preparation and the techniques used to create smooth, durable curved components.
These methods have been used in furniture making for centuries and remain valuable wherever craftsmanship, material efficiency and unique design possibilities are required.
As a practical project, each participant creates a decorative wooden tray featuring a hand-veneered surface and steam-bent handles. The project allows participants to experience the complete process, from material preparation and veneering to bending, assembly and finishing.

Woodturning pens
A one-day woodworking course focused on the fundamentals of woodturning and the creation of handmade wooden pens and pencils.
During the course, participants learn the structure, setup and safe operation of a wood lathe. We cover the basic principles of spindle turning, tool control and material preparation, along with the use of turning chisels, abrasives and polishing compounds required to achieve a smooth, refined finish.
Under the guidance of the instructor, each participant turns and finishes their own wooden pen or pencil using professional pen-turning hardware. The project introduces the complete process, from preparing the blank and shaping it on the lathe to sanding, polishing and final assembly.
