The most important factor is achieving a square cut on the end grain of the workpiece – this determines how well the joint will fit.

Why is sawing more difficult than it seems?

A saw is one of the more difficult tools to master, which is why the quality of dovetail joints at this stage depends more on your skill in using it than on the saw itself.

What saw should you use for cutting the sides of dovetail tails?

I usually use a second-hand backsaw that I bought at a flea market in London. Among Western saws, backsaws are the most suitable for this task. The rigid spine stiffens the blade and provides better control over the cut. My saw has 12 teeth per inch and is designed for rip cutting, but it also works well for crosscuts, so I perform all operations with the same tool.

If you already have your own habits and a steady hand, you can use whichever saw is most comfortable for you. I have seen woodworkers successfully cut dovetails with frame saws. Should they change their habits just because it is commonly accepted that dovetails are cut with backsaws? I don’t think so.

There is no single “correct” saw for dovetails. Skill and control over the tool are what matter most.

A separate topic is the use of Japanese saws. Many of their proponents claim that the quality of the kerf is better and thinner. Maybe so. I own several Japanese saws and can use them, but I definitely prefer Western models. First, the kerf creates empty space, so its width does not matter to me when cutting tails. Second, I achieve perfect joints with my old backsaw, and most importantly – I am used to it and see no reason to abandon that habit. I do not discredit Japanese saws. If you are used to them, use them and refine your technique.

What is most important when sawing the sides of dovetail tails?

The most important factor is a square cut on the end grain of the workpiece. This determines whether the joint will fit (see Photo 1). Of course, this assumes that during sawing you do not deviate too far from the intended angle of the tails.

Photo 1. Properly cut tail with a square end grain cut

Why is a square cut on the end grain critical?

A square cut on the end grain is critical because it determines the accuracy of transferring the tails when laying out the pins in a dovetail joint, and ultimately whether the joint will be gap-free or not. If the end grain is not square, the pins will be either too tight or too loose – regardless of the accuracy of the subsequent work.

Photo 2. Error when cutting tails. End grain view. On the left, a correct square cut; on the right, an incorrect angled cut.

In dovetail joints, the pins are transferred directly from the tails, meaning they are laid out based on the tails that have already been cut. If we try to transfer a tail like the one shown in Photo 2 onto the mating piece from the narrower side (marked with a blue dot in Photo 2), we will cut the pin socket too narrow. As a result, we will either not be able to fit the tail, or, as shown in Photo 3, the tail will split the pin board and the workpiece will crack.

Photo 3. Attempting to force a poorly cut tail into a socket that is too narrow resulted in the workpiece cracking.

Conversely, if we transfer such a tail onto the mating piece from the wider side (the red dot in Photo 2), we will cut a socket that is too wide, and the joint will be loose, as shown in Photo 4.

Photo 4. Pins laid out from a poorly cut tail. After assembly, a gap appears and the joint is loose.

What happens if the tail angle “drifts”?

If you make a proper square cut on the end grain of the board on which you are cutting the tails, and later the angle of the tail deviates slightly from the laid-out angle (for example 1:6), nothing significant will happen. As long as you do not exceed certain critical values, this “error” will be transferred to the pins during layout. The joint will still be correct. It may differ visually from other tails, but technically it will still be sound.

However, it should be remembered that as you approach a square angle or exceed it, the joint will stop functioning properly (it will no longer lock itself). If the tail is cut at too acute an angle, it may shear off or crumble.

A small deviation in the tail angle does not matter as long as a square cut on the end grain is maintained.

How to properly saw dovetail tails – step by step technique

At this stage, maintaining control over the cutting angle and guiding the saw is crucial. This is where it is determined whether the tails will have the correct geometry and whether the joint will fit later without adjustments.

To ensure the correct angle, several key elements must be considered: technique, how the cut is started, and control of the saw throughout the entire stroke.

Sawing technique

From my observations, the most common mistakes when sawing dovetail tails are related to technique, and the most frequent of these is incorrect grip. The saw should be held with a pistol grip and an extended index finger. The saw should be an extension of your forearm – this is the basic condition for controlling the cut (see Photo 5). Stand so that your body does not cross the cutting line and your elbow has some freedom of movement. If the spine of the saw is not aligned with your forearm, during the forward and backward stroke you will have to correct the angle of your wrist to keep the saw in one plane. This will force you to shorten your stroke and reduce cutting accuracy.

Photo 5. Proper grip of the saw during cutting

Key rules for sawing

position your body at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the direction of the cut, so that your arm can move freely forward and backward without reaching the limits of joint movement,

rest the saw blade against the thumb of your other hand,

always cut next to the layout line, not directly on it. If you cut on the line, you will not be able to assess the quality of the cut,

cut from the waste side,

if you are inexperienced and right-handed, cut the lines on the right side of the tail while protecting the tail with the thumb of your other hand; reverse this if you are left-handed. Then rotate the workpiece and cut the remaining lines,

while sawing, keep the saw spine and your forearm in one line. Think about “driving” the entire motion with your elbow,

relax and do not grip the saw too tightly,

when starting the cut, relieve pressure and barely “kiss” the material, beginning from the toe of the saw – this makes starting easier.

How to start the cut – the first kerf

The first kerf on the end grain defines the geometry of the entire tail and guides the saw in the following steps.

Start by cutting the line as shown in Photo 1. No more than half a millimeter deep. To do this, place the saw perpendicular to the end grain and the face of the workpiece (see Photo 6) and make a gentle cut. If you struggle with the angle, you can use one or more of the following methods:

align the saw blade parallel to the layout line,

look at the reflection in the saw plate. If the saw is parallel to the line, it will be perpendicular to the end grain when the reflection aligns in a straight line with the end grain (see Photo 6). Train your sense of square,

place a square against the workpiece as shown in Photo 7 and align the saw parallel to it. This is a very accurate method, but it has some drawbacks. It cannot be used everywhere, and you must be careful not to hit the square with the saw teeth,

place the square next to the workpiece as shown in Photo 8. In this position, aligning the blade parallel to the square is less precise than in the previous method. Be careful – if you cannot hold the square firmly, it may shift due to vibration during sawing.

Photo 6. Setting the saw using a square placed against the end grain

Angle control is more important than working speed – it determines how well the joint will fit.

Photo 8. Placing the square next to the workpiece. Be careful – it may shift if you cannot hold it firmly.

Tip. To increase accuracy and speed up your work, you can saw tails on two workpieces at once when making a box construction (e.g. a drawer). In this case, the line on the end grain will be twice as long, making it much easier to align the saw correctly. Remember that in this case it is best to lay out the tails immediately before sawing to avoid any shifting between the joined pieces.

Sawing the sides of the tails – the actual process

If you already have the initial kerf on the end grain as shown in Photo 1, you can move on to sawing the sides of the tails. Remember to stay within the kerf. Keeping the saw in this groove helps maintain a square angle and ensures correct geometry of the tail. Now tilt the saw in the appropriate direction, trying to align it with the angled layout line.

During sawing, the most important thing is to maintain a single cutting plane, even if the angle slightly deviates from the intended one.

Once you have established the correct angle, begin sawing. First, focus on the visible line. Try to keep the saw seated in the kerf at all times, but cut only the visible line, gradually tilting the saw toward yourself as shown in Photo 9.

Photo 9. Second stage of sawing a tail. Keeping the saw in the kerf, cut the visible side line

How deep should you saw?

Do not cut all the way to the baseline – leave about 0.5 mm for safety.

If you have already reached the baseline, as shown in Photo 9, it is time for the next step. Do not stop the cut – continue sawing the unseen (rear) line while keeping the saw as deep as possible in the kerf. Be careful with the baselines, especially on the hidden side.

After finishing the sawing, the workpiece should look like the one shown in Photo 10.

Photo 10. Properly sawn side lines of the tails

Now we can finish marking on the outside of the workpiece. As you remember from the previous part Dovetail layout – how to mark out tails step by step (Part 1) – Bensari Workshop, we only marked a temporary pencil line there. Take a marking knife and a square, and incise only the sections that define the waste. Do not mark lines under the tails. Remember to reference from the reference faces.

Removing waste – tools and approach

It is time to remove the waste. For external areas, I use the same saw as for cutting the vertical lines, while inside I use a coping saw. Alternatively, you can use a chisel.

Removing internal waste

When removing internal waste with a coping saw, follow the same principles as with a backsaw. Remember to turn the saw gently and during the stroke – otherwise it will bind. A coping saw will also bind if you bend it in any direction. Other than that, it is a simple and very useful tool.

Tip: When using a coping saw, position the workpiece so that you can clearly see the side that matters most, to minimize the risk of error on that side. The “important” side depends on the project. Sometimes it is the outside (e.g. a jewelry box), and sometimes the inside (e.g. a cabinet interior).

Saw above the line, and if you lack experience, keep a larger margin. Although it is a pleasant tool to use, it is difficult to control cutting geometry and easy to make mistakes, resulting in cutting into the line (see Photo 11).

Photo 11. Cutting with a coping saw. Stay away from the baseline if you are not experienced

Removing external waste

The easiest and fastest way is to use the same saw you used to cut the tails. As mentioned, I use a rip-cut backsaw. With 10–12 tpi or finer, you will not feel much difference between well-sharpened rip and crosscut saws.

Before I start sawing, however, I first cut a shallow groove with a chisel up to the layout line to safely guide the saw and protect the edge of the workpiece. See Photos 12 and 13.

Photo 12. Chisel-cut groove just before the layout line

Remember, this groove must be on the waste side, not on the finished side of the workpiece.

Gently saw away the waste. Do not try to cut exactly to the line. The line is refined with a chisel – do not attempt to achieve it with the saw. Keep a safe distance from the line to avoid damaging it. The corners must be executed very precisely to achieve a tight, gap-free fit.

Most common mistakes when sawing tails

lack of control over the square angle,

cutting on the line instead of next to it,

cutting too aggressively,

no allowance left to the baseline,

shortening the saw stroke.

What is most important at this stage?

When sawing dovetail tails, control is more important than speed. Precision comes from repeatable movement and stable technique. In the next part, we will focus on chopping to the baseline. Enjoy the reading.

FAQ – sawing dovetail tails

Does saw quality matter when cutting dovetail tails?

Yes, saw quality matters when cutting dovetail tails, but it is not the most important factor. A sharp and well-prepared saw gives you a clean kerf and better control, but the final accuracy of the joint depends mainly on sawing technique and tool control.

What is the most important thing when sawing dovetail tails?

The most important thing when sawing dovetail tails is maintaining a square cut on the end grain of the workpiece. This is what determines the fit of the joint and whether the dovetail will come together tightly and without gaps.

Do you need to keep the dovetail angle perfectly exact, for example 1:6?

No, you do not need to keep the dovetail angle perfectly exact. Small deviations are acceptable as long as the cut remains consistent. In practice, maintaining a square cut on the end grain is more important than achieving a perfectly exact tail angle.

Why should you not saw directly on the line when cutting dovetails?

Sawing directly on the line when cutting dovetails leaves no room for correction. It is safer to saw from the waste side, just next to the line, and bring the joint to final accuracy later with a chisel.

How do you start cutting dovetail tails without the saw wandering?

To keep the saw from wandering when cutting dovetail tails, make a very light initial kerf on the end grain with almost no pressure. That shallow kerf guides the saw and helps you maintain the correct angle during the rest of the cut.

How do you keep the saw square when sawing dovetail tails?

You can keep the saw square when sawing dovetail tails by watching its position relative to the layout line, using the reflection in the saw plate, or checking the angle with a square. Over time, repeatable movement and a good sense of square become essential.

Can you correct mistakes after sawing dovetail tails?

Yes, small mistakes after sawing dovetail tails can be corrected during chiseling. Larger deviations, however, may still affect the fit and appearance of the joint.

How deep should you cut dovetail tails?

When sawing dovetail tails, you should not cut all the way to the baseline. It is better to leave about 0.5 mm and remove the rest later with a chisel, which gives you more control and better accuracy.

Why does the saw bind when sawing dovetail tails?

A saw usually binds when sawing dovetail tails because of technical mistakes such as twisting the blade, guiding it unevenly, or applying too much pressure. Smooth saw control and a light touch are essential.

Does speed matter when cutting dovetail joints?

Speed matters when cutting dovetail joints, but it is not the most important thing. The quality of the joint depends far more on control, consistency, and repeatable technique. Speed comes naturally with experience.

Cutting tails in dovetail joints is the stage where the quality of the joint depends directly on controlling the cutting angle and your sawing technique.
